We aim to show pupils that Mathematics can be challenging, enjoyable and essential for life in the real world. There is a strong emphasis on developing mental calculation skills and the ability to explain strategies used. (Children use informal jottings to support this before learning more formal written methods.) We aim to encourage children to think mathematically, and to be able to use mathematics in a range of contexts. Children are taught the basic skills of number and algebra, as well as the ability to handle data and to understand and apply mathematical concepts of shape, space and measures. Skills and concepts are developed through structured practical activities, investigations and games, as well as through more formal paper and pencil type exercises. Children’s mathematical thinking is developed and applied throughout the curriculum and in the early years children will acquire a lot of mathematical concepts through play.
